A year ago, Consultant Interventional Radiologists Dr Pradesh Kumar and Dr Rajeev Ravi began treating patients with enlarged prostates with a new procedure called Prostate Artery Embolisation (PAE). Aintree University Hospital is currently the only hospital in Cheshire and Merseyside performing this procedure.

PAE is an exciting new treatment first performed in Portugal and Brazil in 2009. PAE is usually offered to men between the ages of 50 and 80 who have a condition called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH). BPH is a non-cancerous condition which results in an enlarged prostate gland. This gives rise to symptoms of difficulty with passing urine. The likelihood of the prostate enlarging increases as men grow older.

Dr Kumar said: "At least half of men in their 50s experience these symptoms, rising to 80% by the age of 80".

The PAE technique can reduce the blood flow to the prostate gland thus keeping the condition under control. It is important that men are aware and informed of this condition as it significantly affects their quality of life. Traditionally the treatment of choice has been tablets or surgery; although these treatments do work, there can be a small risk of side effects, such as bleeding, incontinence and impotence.

The procedure takes place in the Interventional Radiology operating theatre room within the X-ray department. The treatment works by using tiny particles, similar in size to grains of sand, to block the blood supply to the prostate gland. X-ray (fluoroscopy) is used as a roadmap to guide a fine plastic tube (catheter) into the target blood vessel. Patients remain awake during the procedure as a general anaesthetic is not required, enhancing the speed of the recovery process. PAE is a day case procedure; after the procedure patients are discharged home on the same day.
